Bikram Teacher Training

SANDY ASKS: How many years do you need to practise Bikram Yoga before you can become a teacher?

Great question Sandy! The short answer is six months – and here are a few more Teacher Training FAQs to consider (please visit the official Bikram Yoga Teacher Training site for specific application rules and regulations):

Q: What are the prerequisites for being admitted to Bikram Teacher Training?

You must satisfy these requirements:

  1.  minimum six months of regular Bikram Yoga practice at an affiliated studio;
  2. letter of recommendation from the director of the affiliated studio where you have satisfied the first (a) requirement;
  3. minimum 21 years of age; and
  4. show proficiency in postures.

You must also be physically fit and able to complete two full Bikram Yoga classes daily, attend anatomy classes, lectures and posture clinics and memorize the dialogue.

Q: If I have a condition that may limit my ability to do all of the postures, can I still apply to Teacher Training?

Students with chronic illness or taking medication need to inform program officials before – not during – the training. Students with any physical and/or medical condition that may impede or limit their postures will be required to submit photos of any postures they have limitation in along with their application to training.

Q: What forms do I need to fill out to apply to Teacher Training?

You must also supply proof of identification (two clear copies of your passport/driver’s licence), two passport-sized photos (no copies) and three posture photos (you doing Standing Head to Knee, Backward Bending and Triangle Pose).

Q: How do I know if I’ll make a good Bikram teacher?

If you’ve been practising regularly for quite some time, have experienced the healing effect of Bikram Yoga and want to share your experience and extend the message to others, you’ll likely make a good teacher.

Q: What does the fee for teacher training include?

The total cost includes hotel accommodation (no food) and all lectures, classes, towels and materials necessary to complete the nine-week intensive training program.

Q: Are there scholarships available for students?

Scholarships are available to individuals with an annual income of less than $30,000. In order to apply for a scholarship you must supply proof of your annual income along with the rest of the general application requirements by the deadline. For more scholarship details, see Teacher Training Scholarships on the official Bikram Yoga website.

Q: What will I learn at teacher training?

The curriculum, which is subject to change, can be found here.

Q: What is the daily schedule like?

Your schedule from Monday to Friday typically starts at 8 a.m., runs until at least midnight and includes two Bikram Yoga classes. Here’s a breakdown by day:

  • Basic Bikram Yoga class
  • Lunch break
  • Posture clinic/lectures
  • Basic Bikram Yoga class
  • Dinner break
  • Posture clinic/lectures

  • Basic Bikram Yoga class (morning)

  • Day of rest

Q: If I apply and am accepted to training, how many other students will be there?

The room that’s currently used for classes can accommodate 700 students at a time.

Q: Is Bikram Yoga Teacher certification guaranteed?

No. In order to be certified as a teacher upon completion of training you must pass the anatomy tests, attend and participate in all posture clinics and lectures, be able to deliver the Bikram Yoga dialogue for each posture to Bikram’s satisfaction and demonstrate proficiency in the postures. A mid-term exam will help identify students who are having trouble meeting the certifying standards, and additional help will be available to them. Students not meeting certifying standards at graduation may be afforded additional opportunities for practise and certification.

Q: Will I have a chance to study the dialogue before going to training?

Yes. The dialogue will be mailed to you once you’ve made a payment.

Q: If I apply and am accepted to training, what do I need to bring with me?

You’ll need enough yoga clothes/costumes to complete two classes per weekday and one on the weekend (4-5 changes recommended). You should also bring a yoga mat (or buy one at the hotel shop) and enough casual, comfortable clothes to get you through nine weeks of training. Additionally, you may want to pack a nice outfit for graduation.

Q: Is there anything I am NOT allowed to bring with me to training?

No bandeau tops are allowed in the yoga room. The colour green is also prohibited.
