Did you know that Spandy Andy, one of the most famous buskers to come out of Vancouver, is a Bikram Yoga devotee? It’s true! Though this 25-year-old street entertainer, known for dancing outdoors in “tight and bright” outfits, is currently travelling the world spreading positivity through dance, he got his start in the hot room in our very own West End Studio!

Tell us about your very first Bikram Yoga class …

My first class was in Vancouver at the West End Studio. I had no idea what I was getting into … I couldn’t believe how difficult that first class was. I remember thinking, “That was the best, most thorough workout I’ve ever put my body through!” I bought a 10-day beginner’s pass and returned within the next couple of days. Pretty soon I was hooked and doing at least one class per day. At one point I became so obsessed that I did four classes in a single day! The more I could be in the hot room, the better I felt about myself. Now due to travel, I can’t practise as regularly, but I’ll be starting back up at Bikram Yoga Toronto’s Beaches Studio this week!

What are benefits you have received from Bikram Yoga?

It has really helped in all areas of my life: with my physical balance, strength and endurance, as well as my mental balance and creativity. Bikram Yoga really improves everything, so it’s hard to pinpoint just one benefit. In my opinion, it’s the best way you can spend 90 minutes of your life.

What do you like most about Bikram Yoga? What’s the biggest challenge for you?

The biggest hurdle for me is the heat; it always makes it tough, but the instructors do a great job of pushing you through that. I love the fact that this yoga is always a challenge, no matter where you’re at or how long you’ve been doing it. The human mind and body are more powerful than you know, and Bikram Yoga confirms that anything is possible.

What do you wear when you practise Bikram Yoga?

My motto in life is to keep it TIGHT & BRIGHT. Because it is hot yoga, I don’t wear my full spandex uniform but, rather, a much smaller version called a Budgy Smuggler – perfect for practising in the heat!

Besides Bikram Yoga, what keeps you so positive?

My family has always supported me, and I am especially thankful for the life I have because of my grandmother, a Holocaust survivor.
