Karma Posture Clinic with Mari: May 12

May 8, 2012 12:00 am

On Saturday, May 12, from 12:45 to 2 p.m. at the Kitsilano Studio, BYV’s very own champion Mari D. will be holding a by-donation Posture Clinic where she’ll answer questions, give tips and explain the ins and outs of the following Bikram Yoga postures:

Standing Head to Knee
Stretching
“It’s a chance for people to try the postures, ask questions and watch demonstrations that will help them do these poses correctly and go into them more deeply,” Mari says. “The money raised will help several of us go to the championship in Calgary on May 19.”
She adds that watching yoga demonstrations has helped take her practice to a different level. “It’s allowed me to grow as a teacher and practitioner in so many ways. To watch a yoga demonstration is to watch someone completely in the present moment, sharing a part of themselves. Yoga is my passion, so if sharing my practice with others through yoga demonstration inspires even one person to want to do yoga, then that is really important.”
With the movement to make yoga an Olympic sport gaining momentum, Mari (who’s taken several competitive titles in the past three years) says that competition, rather than taking away from yoga’s meditative aspect, “is just a way for you to get up there and be the best that you can be and inspire other people. It’s not about whether you beat other people.”
